Sonmi and the Moon Gecko Three days after the sapphire gecko case, Sonmi promised herself she would not become the night market's unofficial detective. Then a message arrived from Mr. Dao: Come quickly. This one is stranger. The old reptile house had reopened, but a storm had damaged the greenhouse behind it. Rainwater dripped from a cracked glass roof, and the floor was crossed with muddy lines from shoes, wheels, and tiny animal feet. In the centre of the greenhouse stood a new temporary case. Inside it should have been the moon gecko, a pale gecko with silver spots that became brighter under ultraviolet light. The moon gecko was still there. That was the strange part. Nothing had been stolen. Instead, someone had placed a small paper tag inside the locked case. On it, in blue ink, were the words: It is not where you think it is. Mr. Dao looked embarrassed. "If the gecko is here," he said, "what is not where I think it is?"
